The new season has now begun, and with a fantastic anonymous donation of £250 worth of music from Just Music to play, it looks like being an exciting one! Practices take place at Callander Primary School at 6.45 for the Training Band and 7.30 for the Senior Band. New players are welcome, both experienced and beginners, with instruction and instruments available for those, young or old, interested in trying their hand at playing brass. On Thursday night, instead of the usual practice night for Callander Brass, we were invited to take part in the celebrations for Callander Kirk's Silver Jubilee. A very enjoyable evening was had by all, with music provided by a vocal groups, brass bands, vocal soloists and chimes. The evening was very ably chaired by Rev. Ian Goring, who lead us through the evening with ease. A highlight was the vocal solo by Elspeth Davis, "Oh mio babbino caro" from Puccini's opera was fantastic!! The evening opened with Callander Brass playing two rousing marches, Slaidburn and Emblem of the Army. The band then made way for the other performers, coming back to give a rousing rendition of Skirl (A Scottish Carnival). The next spot by Callander Brass was two solos from Tanya Currie (Flugel Horn), playing "I don't know how to love him" and Harry Milligan (Trombone) playing "The Acrobat". Both very well received, as always our soloists done us proud!! The evening finished with the audience joining the Brass Band in the hymn "Crown him with many Crowns". A fitting close to the evening. Another first awaits Callander Brass next weekend (19th June) when we lead the Doune Gala Parade. Not sure if marching and playing is going to be that easy but fingers crossed!!! |

"Another excellent evening!" was the assessment of one supporter leaving Callander Kirk on Saturday evening, having enjoyed the 2nd Annual Callander Brass Summer Concert. Following on from a very enjoyable visit to Port of Menteith Church in the afternoon, Saturday evening's event provided the players of Callander Brass with another opportunity to demonstrate their growing repertoire to an enthusiastic audience. Supported by an ensemble drawn from the McLaren High School Jazz Band (which featured 3 CB instrumentalists in it's number) the Band performed items ranging in style, tempo and volume to provide those listening with a varied programme. The Training Band also performed, showcasing their development work and receiving warm and enthusiastic encouragement from audience and senior band members alike. A full report will appear here in due course, and a CD of the concert is also in the final stages of production. Use the Order link at the top of this page to reserve your copy now! |
